Jillian Michaels: Sodium Tips

Printer-Friendly Format

Are you resolved to slim down this year? Hi I'm Jillian Michaels for America Takes it Off. One ingredient in particular, you'll want to look out for when trying to slim down is sodium. Sodium slows your metabolism and makes your body retain excess fluid. Leaving you feeling bloated, and feeling soft, and nobody likes that. A healthy daily sodium allowance is about 1500 mg. When you're preparing for a big event, it's OK to drop your sodium level to about 500mg for a few days. Some foods to be mindful of are canned frozen, processed and packaged foods. Make sure to read your food labels and check the sodium content. Usually you will find that there are low sodium options of your favorite foods available. Low sodium soy sauce, low sodium soups, breads, cereals, and so on. If you think this means sacrificing flavor, try to be creative with your seasonings. Use lemon, garlic, any type of vinegar or pepper. Fresh herbs like basil, cilantro, dill, and mint, remember paring foods that act as natural diuretics, such as asparagus, celery, cucumber, and sugar free cranberry juice will also help you keep your water weight in check, leaving you lean and mean.
