Try deciphering the ingredients on any package of processed food and you'll probably abandon your hopes that any healthy man-made foods exist. Although those polysyllabic chemicals sound like they could strip the paint off a battleship, tear DNA asunder or even grant freakish superpowers, you'd be surprised to learn that many of those frightening ingredients aren't engineered by guys in lab coats.
The truth is that some are all-natural compounds squeezed out of fruits and vegetables. Others are simply minerals or vitamins found in unpolluted soil. So, if you want to be savvy about pre-packaged, mass-produced factory food, you'll need to know which brands eschew questionable components and instead stick to all-natural ones.

Check out these healthy man-made foods, including snacks, post- and pre-workout fuel bars, meals, and treats. They'll surprise you with their healthiness, despite their industrial origins.

Clif Bars

Most health bars look like they were formulated in a beaker and pressed into their packages by robotic machinery. That's because most of them are. Clif Bars, on the other hand, seem to have more rustic origins. Their gritty wholesomeness evokes thoughts of bucolic landscapes, stone grinding wheels and cast-iron cauldrons. OK, so the bars aren't made on a farm with 18th-century technology, but they are among the great healthy man-made foods.

What's in them?

Clif Bars contain lots of organically grown grains, fruits and soy, and virtually nothing that you would need to decode with a periodic table. The bars are packed with sugar, mostly in the form of organic brown rice syrup. Still, authentic sugar is far less suspect than lab-brewed alternatives.

Organic brown rice syrup, ClifPro® (soy rice crisp [soy protein isolate, rice flour, malt extract, calcium carbonate], organic roasted soybeans, organic soy flour), organic rolled oats, dried apricots (apricots, evaporated cane juice, rice flour, citric acid, ascorbic acid), organic evaporated cane juice, ClifCrunch® (organic oat fiber, inulin [chicory extract], organic milled flaxseed, organic oat bran, psyllium), organic dried apples, organic date paste, organic sunflower oil, natural flavors, citric acid, salt, colored with annatto.

Least natural ingredient: The least natural ingredient in this healthy man-made food is citric acid. It's a fancy name for vitamin C, a thoroughly natural ingredient, but one that's rarely found in its pure form. Getting it requires a lot of extraction, refinement and general chemical jiggery-pokery.

Fig Newmans

One day, Paul Newman woke up and decided to add "tasty organic food mogul" to his list of awesome attributes. Besides being among the most cleverly named goodies in his ever-growing stable of wholesome processed food products, Fig Newmans are delicious and contain tons of calcium and other vital nutrients.

What's in them?

Organic unbleached flour, organic sugar, organic figs, corn syrup, organic palm oil, water, leavening (sodium bicarbonate, monocalcium phosphate), non-fat dry milk, vanilla, salt, natural flavor, soy lecithin (an emulsifier).
